The Great Northern meeting ope»s on Saturday.
Cornelian was right off color at the Wanganui meeting. Golden Loop jumps nicely, and should not be long in getting his number hoisted.
Old Paritutu is jumping better than ever, and should keep the opposition busy in the Auckland double. .Makara had the services of Deeley in the Winter Oaks at Wanganui, but he could not foot it with the dividendpayers, and Deeley gave up the chase at the distance.
A big army of Hawke's Bay punters went nap on Manitau on -Friday, but the son of San Fran cannot be much good, as he dropped right out of it when the pace was put on three furlongs from home.
(Bonnie Boy carried a lot of money in the Balgownie Handicap, but Jenkins was hard at it to keep the colt in position all the -way, and, although he struggled on gamely in the straight, the weight told its tale over the last furlong. The veteran Compass was palpably short of work when he went out to .contest the Grandstand Steeple, and, although he got round the country safely, his display was'an inglorious oric, and he may be safely left out of calculations for this winter's steeples. [For the first time over big country Continuance ran a great race in trie Wanganui Steeple. He was well up in front all the way, pulling and when he assumed the'lead four furlongs frbnr tho finish the raee looked all ove'r. Considering that lie'"was giving 221b to the winner, a seasoned 'chaser, bis defeat was no disgrace, and the honors of the race all got to the slashing Sabretache gelding. He should be 'one of the hardest to beat at Ellerslie. Koran was well backed at Wanganui, but caught a chill just before" the meetings, and that probably Jtccounfe for his indifferent display.
