EMl'iltE pictures. There are doubtless a large number of "real" picture enthusiasts in New Plymouth, considering the audience at the popular Empire Theatre last night. Notwithstanding the severe cold and wet ; many turned! out to witness the current programme, and judging by the frequent applause and enthusiasm during t'he progress of the several pictures, those who ventured' out were well repaid. The programme is a really excellent one, and embraces items of every description. The dramas include "A Child of the West" (Essanay), "The Signal Code" (Tannhauser), "The flirl and the Motor Boat" (Edison),, and "His Chorus Girl Wife" (Lubin). Magnificent scenery of far off lands is. delightfully depicted in "Scenes in Bonnie Scotland" and "By the Zuyder Zee," the latter being a masterpiece of hand, coloring. "A Wild Stag Hunt on Exmoor" also included some fine scenic glimpses, in addition to the excitement of the sport. This film is a very fine one, being remarkably clear and full of detail, and embracing many unique effects in color tones. The four comic items added much to the enjoyment of' the evening and 1 kept, the audience in j good spirits throughout. These included "Winning an Heiress" (Essanay). "A Diabolical Bos (Urban), "His Brother' l Double" (Lubin), and "A Joke on the Joker." The same programme will be repeated to-night for the last time. The usual change will be made on Wednesday, when the management will present a very vivid and sensational drama entitled "The Moonstone" from the famous story by Wilkie Collins.
