LOCAL GOVERNMENT BILL
THE WELLINGTON CONFERENCE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Yesterday. Interviewed, this morning, Mr. Wilson (Mayor of Dunedin) referred in complimentary terms to the Hon. G. W. Russell's conduct of the recent conference at Wellington, describing him as worthy of a place in any Liberal Ministry. 'Mr. Wilson was very anxious to correct the impression which might have been conveyed to the Minister through an injudicious remark by the Mayor of Auckland that the larger cities were prepared to forego their subsidies for the country. Mr. Wilson said it was not made on behalf of the committee, and pointed out that in £he cities there are a number of Government buildings fulfilling administrative functions throughout the provinces. The Government did not pay rates upon these. If they did, then the subsidy might be dispensed with.
