SHIPS' APPLIANCES
A SYDNEY DEPUTATION. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 27, 9.20 p.m. Sydney, May 27. A deputation from the Trades Hall complained of the insiTicient inspection of ships' boats and other appliances, and asked for the appointment of a Royal Commission for the maritime industry generally. It was alleged that in hundreds of cases boats were never used, and were stuck in the chocks. Tt was doubtful if they could be lowered into tlie wa'ter. On some vessels fire drill was never carried out. In the opinion of the deputation, safety appliances were not all that they should be. It favored lifeboats on a passenger-car Tying basis, not on a tonnage basis. It was denied that the inspections were not properly conducted, and the Government promised an enquiry, but in view of the Federal Government assuming control of navigation it hesitated to introduce local legislation.
