DISTRICT NEWS.

MAKAHU. i (From Our Own Correspondent). Owing to the day fi xe d for our Makahu sports being very wet, they were put off till the following day, which favored the committee's judgment, and a good day's ' sport was the result. Visitors from all quarters began to arrive about noon, and fcy 12.15 p.m. the first event, tilting in the ring, was started. Our local sport, Mr. S. Brewer, proved too solid for the other contestants; Mr. T. Rowe was second. After this, lunch wa3 handed round, which old and young, after half an hour's trial, pronounced' quite up to the Makahu standard. After lunch the ' events were kept going till dark. The 100 yds maiden handicap was -won by T. Lister, with Gus Coyne second; and the 220 yds open by A. Weller, -with F. Froby second. The event of the day, the best lady rider and turn out, was won by Miss Ford (Makahu) on "Johnnie," Miss Myers (Huiakama) being second. The ladies' riding event best-paced Sack, was won .by Miss 'Morris, (Makahu) on "Mushroom," Miss Manning, of 'Strathmore, being a very close second. The judges were Messrs Walker and Bailey, of Tututawa, who gave every satisfaction. The ladies' chain-stepping event was won by our local .teacher, who stepped to within a fraction. The.gents.' chain-stepping was won by our local constable, the other contestants, expecting to be told to move on, stepping a little too far. Mrs. G. Peterson's "The Plunger" won the hunters' competition. The ladies' nail-driv-ing was won by Miss Ford, with Miss Manning a close second. The Misses Myers were first and second respectively in the young ladies' race, while Mrs. j. Manning flew in in the married women's event, with Mrs. A. Lehman coming strong. "Slippery Joe" proved too many for his pursuers. The children had several races during the afternoon, and all went home with something in their pockets. A lollie scramble during the afternoon seemed to sweeten things up a bit, judging by the number of young folk that paired off afterwards. Luncheon was again at hand for all caring to partake thereof, which concluded a very enjoyable afternoon's amusement. One pleasing feature was the number of old Makahu residents', who proved their loyalty to Makahu by again being with us. Mr. Calvert, of Strathmore, catered for the small goods, which were of the "Skipper's" best. The sandwiches were attended to by Mrs. Brewer and Co., who deserved credit for the manner in which they were turned out. A dance was held in the evening, about twenty-four couples taking the floor. Supper was supplied at 11.30 p.m., after which dancing was again indulged in, being kept going till 2 a.m. The music was supplied by Messrs R. Walker, Rowe «.nd J. Froby.
