THE COST OF LIVING
A ROYAL COMMISSION. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Saturday. The following have been appointed a Royal Commission to enquire into and report upon certain questions relating to the cost of living in New Zealand:— Messrs. Andrew Pairbairn (Christchurch), Edwin Hall (Auckland), George Leadley (Wakanui). W. J. Macdonald (Westport), John Robertson (Levin), John Ross (Dunedin), Edward Tregear (AVellington), and W. A. Veitch, M.P. (Wanganui). The Commission is ordered to enquire into such questions as—i Has the cost of living increased in New Zealand during the past twenty years ? If so, has not the increase been more marked during the last ten than during the previous ten years? To what extent is the increased cost of living, if any, the result of a higher standard of living? In what special direction has the increase, if any, been most marked? What has been the effect on prices of tariff reductions? To what extent, if any, has the rise in the price of land during the past twenty years contributed to the rise in price of commodities?
