TOM MANN

ALSO THE SUFFRAGETTES. PARLIAMENT INQUISITIVE. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. London, May 23. Mr. Ramsay Macdonald has asked for Tom Mann's release, or his treatment as a first-class prisoner, on the ground that Tom Mann merely expressed the general opinion as daily expressed by the churches. Mr. Macdonald also urged that Malatest, who was a few days ago ordered 'to be deported, should not be expelled. Sir Rufus Isaacs, Attorney-General, in reply, emphasised that the publication of the letter urging soldiers not to shoot strikers was intended to have consequences, and was not a case for nominal punishment. There was an absence of any expression of regret, or promise not to repeat the offence. Mr. Keir Hardie asked for the remission of sentences passed on Mesdames Lawrence and Pankhurst, and their transfer to the first division. Mr. McKenna promised to consider the matter.
