A New York cablegram states that the well-known aviator, Wilbur Wright, is dying of typhoid fever. Mr. P. D. MeCord, of the staff of the Union Bank, is back at New Plymouth from a holiday in Australia. The flag at the Post Office was flown yesterday in honor of the anniversary of Queen Victoria's Birthday, otherwise known as Empire Day. Mr. MeCord, "of the Union Bank of Australia, who has been visiting his home in Melbourne, returned to New Plymouth on Thursday. The Piako County Council has appointed Mr. H. Evans, of the Napier borough engineer's staff, engineer to the county, at a salary of £3OO per annum. Mr. Buick, missioner attached to the local Salvation Army corps, who has been on a visit to his parents on Kangaroo Island, Australia, has returned. the Government has appointed the following Civil Service Commission:— Messrs. W. D. Hunt (Invercargill), James Mcintosh (Wellington), Peter Barr (Dunedin), and Thomas Finlayson (Auckland). The report is to be in by June 25. A representative gathering of Hawke's Bay Maoris assembled at Omahu yesterday to convey their appreciation to Sir James Carroll of his work as Native Minister for a number of years. Presentations of Maori heirlooms were made to Sir J. Carroll. A handsome present from the Europeans is to be forwarded to Lady Carroll. Sir James Carroll'will leave for Wellington this morning. The Minister of Justice (the Hon. J. Hanan) has approved of the following promotions and transfers in the police force:—lnspector Mitchell (Dunedin) to be inspector at Auckland, in place of Inspector Cullen, now Commissioner of Police; Inspector Dwyer (Napier), to go to Dunedin; Inspector O'Donovan (Invercargill), to go to Napier; Inspector Norwood (Greymouth), to go to Invercargill; Sub-Inspector Phair (Timaru), is promoted inspector of police, and will go to Greymouth. At the luncheon given at St. Patrick's College on Wednesday in honor of Archbishop Redwood's silver jubilee, Ms Grace announced the elevation of the Very Rev. Fathers O'Shea (Wellington), Lane (Lower Hutt), and Power (Hawera) to deanships. It is worthy of note that in the case of the Rev. Father O'Shea the building in which the announcement was made was his alma mater. Dean O'Shea is well-known in Hawera, having spent his boyhood days there. He is a son of Mrs. O'Shea, of Hawera. The Very Rev. Dean Power is one of the best known men in Hawera and South Taranaki— Star.
