STEEL TRUST'S DOINGS
DESTRUCTION OF INCRIMINATING PAPERS. New York, May 14. Some sensational evidence was' given by Harry "Whitney yesterday in the course of the proceedings now in progress against -the Steel Trust, the dissolution of which has been demanded by the Federal Government. Mr. Whitney declared that the instant the suit against the Trust was filed the higher officials ordered subordinates to burn all existing evidence of any breaches of the law of which the company had been guilty. Acting under these instructions, witness said that he gathered all papers of an incriminating nature, and taking them to the boiler-room directed the firemen to burn the documents. Other employees are being called to show that Whitney's case was one of many. Whitney made further startling disclosures to-day, when he stated that the president of the American Steel Wire Company attempted to interfere with the testimony he gave before the Grand Jury. Witness also detailed the operations of the wire pool under the direction of a supervisor, wbo fixed the prices and arranged what companies participating should bid for contracts. It is predicted that during the two months which the New York investigation is likely to last, evidence will be called as sensational as any that has ever been given in a prosecution under the Sherman law.
