SOUTH AFRICAN POLITICS

A STORMY DEBATE. By Cable—Press Association —Copyright. Received 24, 12.5 a.m. Capetown, May 23. A sensational debate occurred in the Assembly. Mr. Smartt commented on Mr. Hull's and Mr. Sailer's statements as being diametrically opposed, and asked the Premier, General Botha, which was true. General Botha regretted that Cabinet differences should be discussed im public. It was true that the Cabinet had not been sufficiently consulted in railway matters. Mr. Hertzog said that Ministers sympathised with Mr. Hull, but it was unfair to blame Mr. Sauer for the difficulties arising over the Railway Board. The Assembly, by 66 votes to 39, refused to adjourn.
