DRASTIC SENTENCES. Bv Cable—Press Association— Copyright. 3 London, May 22. Mr. and Mrs. Pethick Lawrence and Mrs. Pankhurst have been sentenced to nine months' imprisonment in the second division on a charge of conspiracy. HYSTERICAL SCENES. Received 23, 11 p.m. London, May 23. The jury strongly recommended the suffragettes to mercy. Justice Coleridge, in sentencing I them, observed that if there had been contrition or disavowal of the acts committed he would have been disposed to accord them first division treatment. Mr. Lawrence and Mrs. Pankhurst were ordered to pay the costs of the prosecution. _ After the sentence a woman in the Court leapt to her feet, crying "Shame!" A procession passed the dock, shaking hands with the prisoners, who went to their cells amid cries of "Keep the flag lying!" CHALLENGING NOTORIETY. Chicago, May 22. The suffragists are planning a militant campaign on the lines followed in England The leaders of the movement contend that unless newspaper publicity is secured in a sensational manner no notice is taken by the general public of the aims of the movement.
