A London cablegram , announces th« death of Commendatore Martino, th« celebrated marino painter. Mr. H. Buckle, of Messers, A. E. Sykes and Co., proceeded to Wellington yesterday, en route to Sydney, on a business trip. Miss Rosina Buckman and Mr. John Larsen were passengers by the Rarawa, which left Onehunga for New Plymouth yesterday. According to a cablegram from London Mr. Hamilton Wickea will replaee Mr. Grigg, the Canadian Trade Commissioner. He will take up his duties in the autumn. Firemen E. Old and F. Tanner, of the Fitzroy Fire Brigade, have been presented by Inspector Hugo, on behalf of the United Fire Brigades* Association, with five-year medals. Sir James Bryce, British- Ambassador at Washington, was a passenger by tin Manuka from 'Frisco as far as Papeete. From there he intends to come on to New Zealand by the Talune, dus at Auckland next Thursday. Mr. Peter McArdle, a well-known resident of Wellington, died suddenly at Picton on Wednesday. Last Saturday he went to Picton to visit his married daughter. On Wednesday morning ho complained of feeling unwell, and was taken to the local hospital, where he died at 9 p.m. The deceased, who was 57 years of age, came out to N»w Zealand as a boy. He lived on the Weßt Coast for many years, subsequently going to Dunedin, and thence came to Wellington, where he conducted a large carrying business for many years. Mr. McArdle has left a son (Mr. J. McArdM and two daughters (Mrs. W. Scott, of Wellington, and Mrs. J. Campbell, of Picton).
