A MODERN INSTANCE
"ATHENS AND ROME." By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 20 8.50 p.m. Melbourne, May 20. At the conference of SurveyorsGeneral of Australia and New Zealand Mr. O'Malley, in opening the proceedings, said that he was specially gratified, at New Zealand being represented. His own opinion was that New Zealand would ultimately become part of the Commonwealth. If this would have the effect of arresting her march towards democracy he would rather that she did not become a partner of the Commonwealth. New Zealand was at present in the world's lead in economies and humanitarian laws. The eyes of the world were turned to her first and to Australia second, as in older times they first turned to Athens and then to Rome.
