"Mathews partnered Macartney and the latter reached his century in 175 minutes. The total was brought to 200 in 180 minutes. Matthews, who showed some good off driving, had reached 58 when lie was caught at long-off by Bird off Hayes.—Six for 220. _ Macartney was clean bowled in the same over in attempting a drive. lie batted 195 minutes and hit 18 fours. His innings was without a chance. Emery and Hazlitt were then together, and the latter was out leg-before to Rushby.—Eight for 238. Carkeek scored four and was then bowled by Rushby. Emery and Whitty added 30 for the last wicket. The latter was easily caught at cover by Hobbs off Rushby. Emery was not out with 37 to his credit, made in Iris usual vigorous style. Surrey went to the wickets, and Hayward and Hobbs opened to the bowling of Whitty and Emery. Hayward was uncomfortable, and was soon. out legbefore to Emery.—l.—B—2s. Hayes followed and the total was carride to 105, when he lifted Hazlitt to Whitty at mid-on. Hobbs was batting splendidly, but at 81 MacLaren, who was acting as substitute for Jennings, dismissed him by a magnificent catch at long-on off Hazlitt. Hobbs hit one six and 12 fours. Dueat was bowled by Hazlitt next ball.—4—B—ll4. Bush was clean bowled by a fast delivery from Kelleway for nine, and Harrison was bowled by Emery without scoring. Bird was batting powerful!}'. Strudwiek was cleverly caught at short leg by MacLaren off Emery.—7—2—lßß. Bird was bowled while hitting across at Emery. He made 68 in 75 minutes, hitting two sixes and eight fours. Rushby was bowled by Emery. Hitch was absent owing to a chill. The innings closed at 205, Piatt being not out 7. Received 19, 5.5 p.m. London, May 18. The weather was dull when the match was continued to-day, but the attendance was good.
