SPLASHED WITH SULPHURIC ACID. By Cable—Press Association —Copyright. Sydney, May 18. An iron drum, containing 10 cwt of sulphuric acid exploded on the wharf at Newcastle, splashing the contents over five men working in the vicinity. Granger, a laborer, received the full force of the acid on his face and body. Smith, a laborer, was also frightfully burned. The others were splashed on their arms and faces. The injured men screamed and writhed in excruciating pain. Smith plunged into the harbor. Wherever the acid touched, the clothing fell to pieces. The injured men were conveyed to the hospital. Braithwaite and Smith are in a critical condition, but the others are not seriously injured.
