Its •pponents claimed that the provisions of the Bill gave greater benefits to Canadian and British vessels than to their American opponents. They prophesied the complete overthrow of Boston, Portland (Oregon), Seattle and other American ports if the Bill was adopted. A bitter fight is pending over the provision prohibiting railroad-owned vessels from using the canal.
