RACE TO GET RICH.
The eager pursuit of wealth which is so marked a feature of American life of today is undermining the health of the nation. This, at least, is the opinion of Mr. William Muldoon, America's foremost physical culturist, to.whom Presidents, Cabinet Ministers, and even nerve specialists, like the eminent Dr. Weir Mitchell, the greatest American authority on neurasthenia, ha.ve resorted for treatment, and invariably with the most satisfactory results. He says that nearly all classes are affected with a frenzied ambition to get rich quickly, and nearly all the physical and mental derelicts who come to his sanatorium might have remained outside if they had concentrated their energy rather less upon money and more upon rest, recreation and refreshment at regular and more frequent periods. Neurasthenia, which means nerve exhaustion, is almost as common nowadays in the United States as indigestion, and this complaint, which might bo nicknamed "Americanitis," could, in most cases, says Mr. Muldoon, have been avoided if the victims had given less time to business and more to sport. Speaking from vast experience, Mr. Muldoon declares that the Americans of to-day lack the endurance and nervous energy of their parents, and lie declares that the time has come to call a halt, or something akin to national disaster must ensue. What is the remedy? Mr. Muldoon gives the following answer: 'T believe in every man being cautious and energetic, and making every necessary effort to bring his business or profession to success, but when he has sufficient means to place himself beyond the dan-ger-line of ever actually coming to want, and has sufficient means properly to educate and train his children, he should then devote a certain portion of his time and energies to doing good in various other ways than in the pursuit of money." Variety of occupation and not perpetual concentration upon the same line of thought and labor is recommended.
