Emma Goldman, a woman anarchist, was compelled to leave San Diego after a crowd had tarred and feathered her manager, Ben Rutmann, and branded the letters "1.W.W.," indicating Industrial Workers of the World, on his skin. Vigilants escorted Goldman 'V rVnot, and compelled her to depart by the first train.
