EGMONT COUNTY COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING. Tli« ordinary monthly meeting of the Egmont County Council was held last Friday. Present: Messrs. W. C. Dudley (chairman), E. Maxwell, Campbell, Hurst, Farquhar, Harvey, Davey, Wilcox and Burgos.
Applications for licenses for billiard rooms were granted to Mr. Bishop and Mr. Parker. RAHOTU FOREMAN'S REPORT.
In his monthly report Foreman F. Newport, Rahotu, stated that during the month he had been engaged with contracts that were in progress, and in picking up the old metal and laying down the same with newly-crushed metal and blinding parts. Contract No. 201 had been completed by A. W. Cowling. G. Vickery had completed contract No. 202. During this contract he got permission from (Irs. Wilcox and Maxwell to crush an extra 100 yards to connect another piece of good road. LOCAL GOVERNMENT BILL. The Minister of Internal Affairs forwarded a circular letter on the Local Government Bill, and the mode of reprej sentation of delegates.
The executive of the Farmers' Union j forwarded a resolution urging that each local body should be represented at the Wellington Conference, and a resolution similar to it was passed by the Council, and copies of the same were authorised to be forwarded to the Minister of Internal Affairs, and to the meeting of delegates, held at New Plymouth. In the discussion, the chairman expressed the opinion that every local body should be represented. The proposal should be made to the Government to hire a hall in Wellington to accommodate the delegates, and also grant free railway passes. Any charges beyond these two items should be borne by the local au-. thorities represented. Mr. Burgess represented the Council at the conference. In reference to Mr. Claris's application for permission to fell the bush across the road at the Wiremu-Te Kiri end (between sections 7 and 8, block VIII) O.S.D. and to be recouped for the work at contract price, the clerk reported that the district road engineer had replied as follows: "As the contract in hand absorbs the whole of the year's vote I cannot authorise the felling (desirable though jit be)." The portion referred to starts
from about three chains from end of work to road already let as far as the Maungahume river, and would, in the ordinary way, be done by the Council under next grant.
It was decided to heartily endorse the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce's resolution appreciating the attitude of the Minister of Defence in connection with the enforcement of the law relating to compulsory training. Licenses to slaughter stock were granted to Messrs. Black, Dudley, Cloake and Laws.
The Lands Department notified that thirds to the amount of £2 13s had been paid to the Council's credit.
After some discussion it was decided to act upon the recommendation of Foreman Humphries that the hauling blocks he had borrowed should be purchased.
