DISTRICT NEWS.
EGMONT VILLAGE. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The annua] meeting of the Egmont Village Mutual Improvement Society was held on Thursday, May 0. The president (Mr. A. Morton) occupied the chair, eleven members being present. The annual report and balance-sheet were read and adopted. Officers were elected as follows: President, Mr. IT. W. Baxter; secretary and treasurer, Mr. Gor-, don Marsh; committee, Messrs. R. Burrows, N. S. James, Carter and Davis. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the retiring secretary (Mr. E. Dewhirst) for 'his services. Mr. Baxter favored the meeting with a reading entitled "The Jackdaw of Rheims." The Society opens on Thursday, May 10, -the programme being impromptu speaking. From all account, Territorials in this district are not having too happy a time. The commanding officer arrived on the scene last Wednesday, only to find Territorials wanting. On Thursday, according to instructions, the boys rolled up in force, watched and waited for the officer to put them through the drill, but he failed to put in an appearance. Evidently someone had blundered. This is not the way to popularise the scheme of military training. Several boys who can ill afford to lose the time came many miles to attend the drill. You cannot wonder if they are not very enthusiastic over it if this kind of management is allowed to continue.
During the last few days the weather has been all that could be desired. The milk for this time of the year is keeping up splendidly.
