BOROUGH COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. ESTIMATES ADOPTED. Last night's meeting of the New Plymouth Borough Council was attended by the Mayor (Mr. G. W. Browne), and Crs. H. 'Gilbert, J. C. Morey, J. T. Mannix, J. Clarke, H. Stoeker, W. Ambury, T. Buxton, J. Buttimore, J. Hartnell, and F. Jackson. THE MAYOR'S HONORARIUM. Discussing the estimates, Cr. Mannix moved that the items referring to the increase in salary to both the borough engineer and the electrical engineer be struck out. His motion was defeated. Regarding the Mayor's 'honorarium, Cr Morev moved that it be reduced by £25, making it £125. His reasons for doing so were that in committee Mr. Browne had expressed himself quite satisfied with his present remuneration of £IOO. At the present time it was as much as the Borough Council could do to make both ends meet. Cr. Ambury: I tried to move a similar resolution in committee. The Deputy-Mayor: Well, is there any seconder for the resolution now? Cr. Amhury: No, I won't second it now. The Council unanimously decided on £l5O the other night. Or. Mannix: I'll second the motion, pro forma. The motion was defeated, only the mover voting for it. After discussion on one or two other items, the Estimates as recommended by the Estimates' Committee and published in yesterday's issue of the News, were passed without amendment . VARIOUS MATTERS.

The tender, at £lßl 10s, of P. K. Baillie was accepted for the supply of hard-drawn insulated cables. The Reserves Committee was authorised to nut up for auction the leases of the sections of the Avenue road reserve still remaining unsold, including those sections fronting Hendric street, which were previously withheld from sale, but excluding .section 14. The borough engineer was authorised to widen Hobson street footpath at a cost not exceeding £SO. On the motion of the Mayor, the names of Messrs. G. A. Corne.y, F. Francis, C. N. Johnson, F. Newell, and H. R. Gatley were added' to tfhe Western Park Committee.

The Mayor moved and it was decided that a committee, consisting of the Mayor and Cr. Buxton, he appointed to deal with the adjustment of accounts with the Taranaki County Council with reference to the new area (Hurworth) added to the borough. The Mayor was appointed to represent the Council at the ceremony to be held on May 29 in connection with the unveiling of a cairn in the Wailii military cemeteryj Normanby, and the mon; ument in Victoria Park, Normanby, erected to commemorate the memory of fallen soldiers. . .

Application was made for permission to connect Mr. Goad's property with the water-main at Dartmoor. The request was acceded to. After considerable discussion, the Council decided to make a progress P a y" ment of £750 to Messrs. Turnbull and Jones, on account of material supplied in connection with the additions to the electric lighting plant. The Magistrate having confirmed the decision of the electors, the following special order was passed Council: "That the triangular portion of King street, containing one perch and one tenth of a perch, bounded on the east by section 2329, and towards the south by sub-sections 3 and 4 of section 646, be wholly stopped." j. The Council's solicitors notified that after the special order was passed it would he necessary for the Council to appoint a competent valuer to value the piece intended to he stopped. They understood that it was the intention of the Council to sell one niece to Mr. Jones for .CSO and the other piece to Mr. N. King for .€lO. but before this could be done a valuation must be made by a competent valuer appointed by the Council, The Works. Electric Light, and Reserves Committees' reports were^adoptj
