The death is reported of Mr. Samuel R. Kennedy, late manager of the Bank of New Zealand, Patea. A London cablegram announces the death of .Mr. Archibald Coates, head of the famous thread firm. Councillor J. Clarke was appointed Deputy-Mayor, for a further term, at last night's meeting of the Borough Council.
Mr. E. Oilmour was appointed last night as assessor to represent the New Plymouth Borough Council at the sitting (if the Valuation Assessment Court. Mr. A. B. Gamlin, of Inglewood, has joined the firm of Matthews and Bennett, auctioneers, of that town. The title of the firm henceforth will be Matthews, Bennett and Co. Thfi death is announced of Mr. Arthur .Fitchi'tt, late postmaster at Waiuku. and one time in the postal service at Hawera. Mr. Fitchett retired from active service two years ago, since when he has been in declining health.
The l'a'merston Chamber of Commerce last, night passed a resolution of condolence with the family of the late Mr. Joseph Nathan, "who recently died in London, and was identified with the early development "of Palmerston. Bishop Grimes has heen advised of the death of Father Ginity, rector of St. Patrick's, Church Hill Sydney. The late Father Ginity was one of the Marist Fathers, and was held in affection and esteem by a very wide circle of friends in Australia and New Zealand (says the Christchurch Preas). A Press Association cablegram announces the death of the Earl of Euston, eldest son and hejr to the seventh Duke of Grafton. Born in IS4B, he served with the Rifle Brigade, and was at one
time in command of the Adelaide Rifles, South Australia. He leave:? no issue, and a brother becomes heir to the Duke of Grafton, who is 91 years of age. The Hon. T. Rangihiroa stated at Masterton that at one time lie was engaged in a humble occupation on a Wairarapa sheep station. It was there ■t'hivt he thought of the possibilities which might accrue from education, and he resolved upon a course of study. Eventually he succeeded in gaining a place in the Te Aute College, and from there lie graduated as a medical student.
Yesterday was the twenty-fifth anniversary of Archbishop Redwood'a appointment as an archbishop. His Grace was ordained at Maynooth in 1865, appointed to the Bishopric of Wellington in 1874, and created an archbishop on May 13, 1887. The silver jubilee will not be celebrated i this week, owing to the Archbishop's absence from Wellington. but fitting ceremonies will be conducted on Wednesday of next week, Mr. Harold Beauchamp, ex-chairman of directors of the Bank of New Zealand, arrived in Wellington on Saturday afternoon. Mr Beauchamp left at the end of June last, and, travelling by way of Canada, reached London in August, where ho joined Mrs. Beauchamp and the members of his family, who left Wellington three months before him. Several months were spent in England, and the whole party returned via Suez and Australia.
