TRACTION ENGINE TURNS TURTLE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Hastings, Last Night. The Hawke's Bay Timber Company's traction engine, drawing two trucks of gravel this afternoon, under contract with the County Council, broke through a bridge on the Havclock-Mangatcretere road, turned turtle and fell thirty feet into the creek below. The driver, R. C. Turpin, aged 40, a married man, with five children, resident at Port Ahuriri, was killed instantly, the top of his head being crushed between the cab and the bridge timber. His mate, Laurence Williams, of Rissington, fell into the water beneath the engine, and remained there until the steam cleared. He was scalded about the face and leg, but "was not otherwise seriously injured. He was removed to the Napier Hospital.
KILLED BY A MOTOR-CAE. Auckland, Last Night. The inquiry into the circumstances surrounding -the< death of Mrs. Jeannio Prowse, killed by a motor-car at Reinuera, on May 8, was commenced yesterday, and concluded to-day. A great deal of evidence was taken, and the jury returned a verdict that death was due to shock, following on injuries caused by impact with the motor-car, and that the deceased met her death accidentally through an error of judgment on the part of the driver. The jury added the following rider: "The jury desire to call the attention of the Government to the evidence of John Beveridge Lindsay, traffic inspector for Auckland, they being distinctly of the opinion that every person driving a motor-oar on the public highways should be the holder of a "certificate of competency."
