THE POTATO MARKET
MR. KIRK EXPLAINS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. Mr. G. W. Kirk explained to representatives of leading potato merchants today the difficulty in regard to the export of potatoes to Australia. He said that the Department was doing all it could to obtain a relaxation of the conditions, but the regulations imposed by the Commonwealth must be adhered to. It was stated by agents that farmers would not assist them in regard to certifying, as required by the regulations, owing to the market having risen and farmers hoping that contracts would be cancelled. Mr. Kirk said he would see in a few days if anything could be done to bring about an improvement. He denied that he liad been responsible for holding recent shipments up in Sydney.
