Trenkler is in an advanced state of consumption, and is dying. He presented a pitiable figure. Despite the presence of paper parcels containing the skulls of his victims, he narrated how he felled his wife. He was escaping when the girl entered. She clung to him until he felled her with a jemmy. He was driven to the murders by an irresistible longing for gold and jewels. An attack of hemorrhage necessiated an adjournment of the court.
