A squadron, composed of the Vittorio, Emanuele, Regina, Elene, Napoli and Roma, left Samphalia on Friday, with lights out, and proceeded at half-speed to the Island of Charki, ten miles west ■ of Rhodes. Another squadron followed, conveying landing forces of 8000. All were concentrated by 2 a.m., arriving at Rhodes at 3.30. A section of the fleet made a demonstration in the harbor, and another section guarded the disembarkation of the troops in a bay eight miles south of the town. The Turkish troops did not appear. The warships did not fire a shot. The Turks withdrew to a plateau five miles south-west of Rhodes, where Admiral Amenglin immediately attacked them, in order to prevent their with- ■ drawing to the centre of the island. ' There were several bayonet charges by the Italians. Five men were wounded. Fifty Turkish prisoners were taken. The Turks are now on a small peninsula on the north of the island. The warships are able to co-operate by en-. filading both flanks.
