j j THEFT FROM A STEAMER. I By Telegraph—Press Association, j Auckland, Saturday. John Norman Rigg, aged 21, and Robert Pomery, aged 17, were arrested . yesterday, charged with the theft of a steward's portmanteau, containing articles worth £6O, from the Aorangi in Wellington on April 25. Pomery was employed on the boat, while Rigg was a hotel porter. Both disappeared after the theft and were traced to Auckland. They were remanded to appear in Wellington. DESTROYED BY A WHIRLWIND. Eketahuna, Saturday. A new residence, in course of erection for Frank Robinson, at Hamua, was t struck by a whirlwind and practically demolished. The roof was torn off and portions carried a considerable distance away, while the chimney was almost razed to the ground. The building was almost completed. THE lIOLMDALE IN TROUBLE. Napier, Saturday. The Maoriland Oo.'s steamer Holmdale, which left Gisborne a wcelc ago for Greymouth, put into port this morning, short of coal. She experienced a severe buffetting, especially in the vicinity of Cape Palliser, where she was hove to for some time. Being unable to : make Wellington, she was obliged to run back to Napier. Her propellor worked loose, and the steamer was placed on the slip here to remedy the defect. She will resume her voyage to-morrow.
