THE OSBORNE JUDGMENT
TO BE REVOKED. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright London, May 2. Mr. Asquith, in the House of Commons, announced that he would introduce before Whitsuntide a Bill reversing the Osborne judgment. The Osborne judgment was the result of an action brought by a foreman porter against the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants. His complaint was that he was compelled to subscribe to support Socialist members of Parliament with whose views he did not agree. The result of the case was a decision tbat it was illegal for trade unions to compel unwilling members to contribute to a political fund. This state of affairs has been bitterly resented by the Labor leaders, and they have refused to accept the payment of members as satisfaction for their demand. Last year the Trades Union Bill was introduced to meet the difficulty, but this was dropped after a good deal of criticism from both Conservatives and Laborites.
