r A' STEAMER BEACHED. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Melbourne, May 2. The steamer Peregrine, with over 100 passengers and a large general cargo, was leaving the river, when a plate over «n' old port hole was displaced. The water gained so rapidly that the captain beached the vessel at the entrance of the bay to prevent her sinking. The' passengers were landed. The damage to the cargo will not be known until the steamer has been temporarily repaired and reberthed.
AN ANTHROPOMETRIC STANDARD. Melbourne, May 2. Arrangements have been made for the Government Statist to draw up an anthropometric standard for the children of the Commonwealth. SYDNEY'S BIRTH RATE. Sydney, May 2. The birth-rate in Sydney for April is the highest recorded since April, 1897, and 11 per cent above the average of the last five years.
