Mr. Felix McGuire, of Okaiawa, was a passenger by the Ra'rawa yesterday) morning. Mr. C. E. Mackay, Mayor of Wanganui, and Mr. A. Burton, Mayor of Wanganui East, were yesterday installed in their offices. The Gonville Town Board last night appointed Mr. C. H. Law, of New Plymouth, to be engineer foreman of the town district. Alderman G. T. Clarke has been elected Lord Mayor of Sydney. Mr. Clarke was formerly Mayor of St. Kilda, Dunedin, and town clerk of South Dunedin. A Melbourne cablegram states that the liner China' 6 passengers for New Zealand are: Miss Billington, and Messrs. Williams, Alford and Brownsworfch. Mr. C. Denny Brown, late of Wellington, has permanently taken up the duties of local district secretary of the A.M.P. Society, in succession to the late Mr. C. A. Benbow. Mr. W. Eyre-Kenny, senior mining warden of the Federated Malay States, will shortly be visiting New Plymouth on his furlough. Mr. Kenny is a New Zealander, the son of Mr. H. EyreKenny, S.M. (retired). He was born in New Plymouth, and educated in Auckland. At the recent Mayoral elections Mr. B. C. Bobbins defeated the Rev. Canon Jordan (the'sitting Mayor) for Tauranga by a substantial majority. Mr. Robbins was Mayor of Hawera for a number of years, and proved himself an ahle leader and successful administrator. It will not be his fault if Tauranga does not move forward.
Mr. A. W. Rutherford says that though it was publicly stated that he intended contesting the Hurunui seat at the next election, tin's is not strictly correct. "What T did promise was' tliat in the event of .-! dissolution I would favorably consider the. proposition, and that owing to the chaotic state of the party in office it would be as aji Independent." Mr. R. A. Callender. of the New Ply. mouth Post Office, and chairman of the local branch of the Post and Telegraph Officers' Association, has been transferred to Ongarue, as postmaster. Mr. E. 0. Lythberg, another member of the local post office, is under transfer to Wellington. Mr. Callender is a very capable officer, and should successfully fill the responsible position to which he has been appointed. ' Mr. Valentine Harrison, who was for some years a resident of the Opunako district, died at Hawera- on Sunday morning. He was a native of New Plymouth and aged 57 years. Deceased served for several years on the literary staffs of the Manawatu and Wairarapa papers, and started the Woodvilte Examiner. Later on he took up fanning in the Oputiake district. Owing to illhealth he retired to a quiet life in Hawera.
Mr. John Hackett, a resident of Poverty Bay for a quarter of a century, died at Gisborne a few days ago; The late Mr. Hackett, who was well-known in the district had had an adventurous career. He arrived >in New Zealand about fifty-three years ago, and had his share of the hardships of the early pioneers during the troubles with the Maoris. He was all through the Waikato war, and for eighteen years wae farming in the Waikato district. News has just been received by cable that Mr. John Sinclair, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sinclair, of. Vogeltown, has had the misfortune to lose- one '•' of his legs. He got it hurt while play- "' ing football, and amputation was found ' to be necessary. He had been studying medicine at the Glasgow University for ... the previous three years or bo, and had come through his examinations with flying colors. General sympathy will be felt for him and his family in the misfortune % that has overtaken them.
The staff of the Labor Department bade farewell to tlie Hon. J. A. Millar, late Minister of Labor, in Wellington yestenlnv afternoon,, and presented him with an illuminated address, subscribed to" by .pvpi'.v on"k" r of the department throughout the Dominion. Mr. J. Lomas, Secretary'for Labor, made the presentation. The Hon. G, Laurenson was present. The Labor Minister said-that he was sure the workers of New Zealand would have no more loyal friend than Mr. Millar. In reply, Mr. Millar heartily thanked the .staff for the presentation, and spoke appreciatively of the manner in which he had been supported by his. officers.
Mr. C. nood Williams, secretarv and treasurer of the Lyttelton Harbor Board, who has been in failing health for some months past, died on Monday evening „ (states a Press Association message). Mr. Hood Williams was of Welsh parent- . age, but was born in Edinburgh in 1844.' He came to New Zealand'ln the ship Randolph with hi& father, the late Mr. " D. T. Williams, 8.A., arriving in Port Cooper in 1850. Mr. Williams was edu- " cated at Christ's College, Christchurch, - He entered the* service of the Bant of Australasia in 1861, and after three years he left the bank on account of illhealth. In 1864 he entered the Pro- , vincial Government service as a clerk. > Under the secretaryship of the late Hon. W. Rollcston, from 1873 to 1877, Mr., Williams occupied the position of as- • sistant secretary, and on the abolition of /h the provinces, he was appointed seer*- ' t tary and treasurer of the Lyttelton Har-$j bor Board, which position he held up to ■■>, the time of his death, a period of thirty* „ five years.
