TERRIFIC GAS EXPLOSION
A SENSATIONAL EXPERIENCE. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 1, 9.20 p.m. Sydney, May 1. A terrific gas explosion occurred to-day at Homebush. It completely wrecked a newly-built shop, and shattered the windows of neighboring buildings. It also seriously injured two men. The shop was occupied by Riley and Co., estate agents. Mr. Riley, jun., lit a spirit lamp, and almost immediately there was an explosion of gas, which is supposed to have leaked from new pipes. The whole building collapsed.
Riley and his assistant were buried in the debris, and both are in a serious condition.
A workman standing in front of the shop was blown across the road, but was practically uninjured.
