RAILWAY SERVICES

WELLINGTON AND COUNTRY NEEDS. Palmerston N., April 29. The council of the Chamber of Commerce to-day, in reply to overtures from the Wellington Chamber to overcome the city's present isolation from the country, decided to co-operate in endeavoring to improve the train service between Wellington and Manawatu, particularly the morning and evening trains; and to support the proposed deviation of the Manawatu line through the Akatarawa Valley when such duplication is necessary. If duplication were carried out between Palmerston and Waikanae, one line could run through Akatarawa Valley to the Upper Hutt, and the other remain as at present. It was decided t'o support the Wellington Chamber in its endeavor to have a central station commenced, in the hope that Wellington will support the Palmerston demands for platform facilities and station buildings.
