FOOTBALL
Several members of the Olcato Football Club have indulged in useful practice with a view to the opening match | against the Stars next Saturday. There will be very little new blood in the team, and several of last year's players have not put in an appearance at practice yet, so that it is doubtful if they will be available this season. They include lieke Martin and Kuke (backs), and Ray Julian and 0. A<l!a.m (forwards). The team for next Saturday has not yet been finally decided upon, owing to the absence of L. Carey and E. Malone (two of the selectors) from the district.' It is expected that the former, who is a weighty forward and plays with vim from start to finish, will return in time for the opening match. E. Malone, who is club captain, has not been very regular in his attendances at practice, due to pressure of business, but as he keeps himself fit should probably last out the game, though perhaps ho will not be' so much in touch with his team play as a captain should be. J. L. Power will not be playing this season, as the claims of increasing business demand too much attention. Still, as secretary, he will still ably assist his club through the troubulous shoals of finance, and if the team is short-handed, Jack will not see them stuck. C. Eustace is showing great form at practice. He trains systemati-; cally, and his following up and' tackling are features of his play. Corbett is a very useful back, whoso services the club will lose in a few days, as he will leave i the district for the winter. A meeting was held at Okato on Saturday, Mr. D. P. Evans presiding, when a Pastimes Club was formed, with Mr. !B. T. Booker as president, Messrs. J. S. [Fox, S. A. Dailey and Rev. Addenbrooke. vice-presidents; Messrs. D. P. Evans, J. L. Power, L. Carey, J. O'Sullivan and F. Jenkins, committee; and J. L. Power lion, secretary. Various games will be indulged in, of which boxing will probably be the principal attraction. The subscription was fixed at 2s 6d, and a punch ball was donated by the president. The season will be opened 011 Tuesday night, and will be continued on every Tuesday thereafter. The club should draw a large membership among the young fellows of the district, as it will provide a splendid means of passing some of the long winter evenings, and should assist the footballers to keep in form.
