FIRES.
AT MAKOTUKU. By Telegraph—Press Association. Dannevirke, Monday. The Beacxmsfield Hotel (Davies, licensee) at Makotuku was burned down early yesterday morning. Sugden's store, the public library, blacksmith's shop, and an office and saleyards were also burned. Very little was saved from the hotel and nothing from the store. The origin of the fire is not known, and the insurances axe not available.
LIME AND CEMENT WORKS BOKtnro. Te Kuiti, Monday. Wilson's lime and 1 cement works were destroyed by fire on Saturday night, much valuable machinery being lost or damaged. Forty men are rendered idle as the result. The insurance, in the New Zealand Office, amounts to £2955. Tt is supposed that the fire started in the generator house of the small engine. When the fire was discovered the manager and employees endeavored to eav« the building, but a high wind rendered the work difficult and. dangerous. Amongst the machinery destroyed were two suction gas plants, one 100-h.p. and the other 50-h.p. The works supplied metal for Waikato roads and lime for the farmers throughout the province, also for cyanide batteries on the goldfieldo.
