The sheep were a good lot and competition was brisk for nearly every line, prices on Hie whole showing an improvement ,011 late rates. Prices realised were:—For Mr. P. Knight's stock: Lambs Gs 811, cull lambs 3s Id, 2 and 4-tooth ewes Us (id. O-tooth and f.f.m. ewes lis Id, mixed ewes and wethers 6s 2d, 2 and 4-tooth wethers 12s fid. Mr. A. J. Kirkham's stock: 4 and G-tooth ewes and rams 11a 7d, 2-tooth ewes 12s lid, 2-tooth wethers Lis, lambs 7s 3d, cull lambs 2s 2d, mixed ewes Gs, Cortland waggon £lO ss. At 'Kaponga on the same day the yards were again well filled with cattle, i mostly cows and weaners. The demand throughout was good. Best weatier colored heifers made £1 17s fid to £2 1-, others £1 5s to £1 10s fid, weaner steers £1 ss, mixed weane'rs (best) £1 os to £1 13s, poor 12s Cd to £1 Is, i store cows £2. 3s to £3 2s fid, forward cows £3 10s to £4 12s, fat cows £4 17s to £5 12s, 20-months steers £3 7s fid, ; mixed sheep Gs 9d. Notwithstanding the very weat weather, I had a fair entry at liahotu on Tuesday and a good attendance, bidding being brisk right through. Everything was sold at the hammer at the following rates:—Weaner steers 18s fid to £1 fis, weaners heifers (Jersey-Holstein cross) £2 12s, grade heifers £1 lis to £1 IBs, mixed weaners £1 5s fid to £1 fls, mixed yearlings £2 Is (id, 15-months steers £2 19s, 2-vear heifers in calf £4 7s fid, 3-year bullocks £5 8s fid, store cows £1 12s to £3 {ls, forward cows £4, fat cows £5 7s (id, bull £2 10s. Mr. W. J. Parsons' clearing sale at Pukearuhe, Urenui, on Wednesday, the 24th inst., was attended by a large and representative number of buyers. The cows were mostly second and third calvers and in good condition, and realised, 'after good competition, from £4 15s to £lO >ss, 2-year Jersey-cross heifers in calf £5 to £8 15s, bulls £2 5s to £3 ss, 2 and 2y 3 -year steers £3 18s, yearling . heifers £2, grade Jersey calves £1 Gs fid 1 to £2 ss, horse £ls 15s, hoggets 12s sd, f.m. ewes ss, porkers £1 3s, sows £1 to £2 15s. MATTHEWS & BENNETT'S REPORT. Messrs. Matthew and Bennet report that there was a fair yarding of cattle in their Inglewood yards on Wednesday last, and most lots changed hands as follows:—Calves, from £1 2s to £1 10s; store cows, £2 5s to £3 10s; in-calf heifers, £3 15s to £l2 6s; bulls, £2 7s 8d to £'s Is; lambs, 7s 2d. They also report having sold, privately, in-calf heifers £0 10s to £7 10sj 15 to 20 m'onth heifers £3 2s to "£3 7s 6d; 2year steers, £3 5s to £3 7s 6d. They have several enquiries for dairy herds and good in-calf heifers. Anyone wanting to sell should let them know. LOAN <fc MERCANTILE CO.'S REPORT. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd. (Stratford branch) report:— On Friday, April 12, we held our usual monthly sale at our Kohuratahi yards, when there was a fair yarding of cattle and a few sheep. The bulk of the cattle were sold at the hammer at the following prices:—Bullocks 120s to 1235, 2 1 / a -vear steers 90s to 955, 20-months in-calf' heifers (32s fid to 655, 20-montlis empty 'heifers 54s to IOOs, springing heifers 82s fid to 90s, Jersey weaner heifers 455, weanevs 21s to 325, fat cows 93s to 103s, store cows 64s to 775, 2-tooth wethers lis fid to 12s, 2, 4 and >G-tooth wethers,' 13s. there was a fair yarding of fat pigs, and they sold well, choppers realising up to £4, large baeoners 60s to 745, smaller 50s to 60s rl (n riVjd ppr lb); porkers 44a to -i.S., (id. lighter 3Ss (id to 42s fid (equal, to 5%d to fid per lb). A small lentry of stores met with little demand, large, sorts making 30s to 335, medium 20s to 27s Cd, small 6s to Os. There were no weaners offered.
BURNSIDE. j At Burnside 200 fat cattle were yarded. The quality was better than has heon in the yards for some time, a good number of pens consisting of prime bullocks. As the number was in excess of requirements, prices were easier, especially for cows and heifers, but bullocks were more keenly competed for. Extra heavy bullocks £ll 5s to £l3 ss, good £0 15s to £ll, light and medium £6 10s to £9, extra heavy heifers £8 5s to £9, good £7 to £B, medium £5 10s to £f> lfls, light £4 to £5 ss. l'at sheqp—(Prime heavy wethers to 22s 9d, good 17s to 19s fid, light 15s to l'Gs 6d, extra heavy -ewes to lfls 9d, good 13s to 15s (id, medium 10s to 12s Gd, light and unfinished 7s to 9s (Id. JOHN SONVILLE. Messrs Abraham and Williams, Ltd., Teport:—A large entry of prime cattle and sheep came forward, and sold readily at late rates. Prime heavy bullocks £lO to £lO 7a 6d, prime bullocks £9 7s 6d to £9 15s, lighter £8 15s to £9 2s fid, prime cows £6 10s to £6 17s 6d, good wethers l<ss 4d to 16s 6d, prime heavy ewes 14s lOd to 15s sd, prime ewea 14s 2d to 14s 6d, lighter 13s od, prime lambs 13s to 13s 9d, good 12s to 12s 6d.
LONDON MARKETS. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company have received the following cablegram from their London house, under date April 24: Tallow.—We quote present spot values for the following •descriptions of tallow: Good mutton, 35s ®d per cwt; good beef, 345; mixed, 32s 3d. The market is firm. Wheat.—We have sold at 40e 9d c.i.f. a handy Australian cargo. There is very little demand, owing to increased supplies, and market prospects are not likely to improve at present. Dalgety and Co., Wellington, have received cabled advice from their head office, under date April 24, that the programme for the wool sales has been shortened by three days, and \hat the sales will now close on May 4.
