A Sydney cablegram states that Sir Allen Taylor, Lwd Mayor of Sydney, ka§ been appointed to the Legislative Council.
Captain E. V. Bevan (N.Z. Garrison Artillery) and Captain G. J. Rastrick (16th Waikato Regiment) have been promoted to be majors. Captain William Murdock, R.N.R., chief officer of the ill-fated Titanic, wan a brother-in-law of Mrs. William Foster, Hutt Road, Petone.
Mr. W. H. Field, ex-M.P., is to be banquetted at Waikanae at an icarly date to fittingly recognise his many valuable services to the district.
The Labor Party in Wellington intends to nominate a candidate for the vacancy on the City Council caused by Mr. McLaren's election to the mayoralty.
Mr. James Mackenzie, who has been appointed Surveyor-Gieneral, presided over the monthly meeting of the Land Board at Wellington yesterday, for the last time. At the conclusion of the business the retiring Commissioner was presented with a framed photograph of the members of the board.
At the meeting of the Taraanki Agricultural Society on Wednesday night the president,' Mr. W. Ambury, congratulated Mr. G. W. Browne (who is a prominent member) on his election to the position of chief magistrate of the town, and wished him every success during the coming year. The Mayor in returning thanks expressed the hope that his /election would be the consummation of the big schemes at which the council had been working during the past year. The council as a body had those schemes thoroughly at heart and would put forth every endeavor to carry them through.
