WEST END. M ■Mr. J. B. Roy presided over a fairattendance of householders at the West End school last evening. The balaneesheed as read by the secretary showed a credit balance of £5 3a lid, against; this being sundry outstanding liabilities! amounting to 9s 3d, which left a net '• credit balance of £4 14s Bd. In moving v its adoption, Mr. Roy congratulated the committee on having what must be con- ]V sidered a fair balance with which to com- li mence the following year's operations, v Mr. Gilbert, as chairman of the past 1: committee, congratulated the teachers t on the excellent way in which they had t assisted to finance the committee at dif- \ ferent times by organising concerts, thus 1 besides paying off the debt on the piano 1 and buying various articles for school r use, the committee had still a good j credit balance to work on, although.! when they took office there was a debit ] balance of £27. He also congratulated i the parents and teachers for the way ! in which they had always worked in r . harmony with the committee. The Bible 1 reading in schools had proved (with one i or two exceptions) a success. These ] classes were conducted after school i hours, so it was not compulsory for those i children who had any objections to i Bible reading to attend. In conclusion 1 Mr. Gilbert thanked the teachers and the 1 committee for the loyal support that ; had been accorded him during his term of office, also Mr. Thompson, who so kindly organised a concert, the proceeds of which he hande\ over to the com-, mittee. I Mr. Goad congratulated the parents on having such an energetic committee, and said the West End school was well off. \ Eleven were nominated for the committee, and the election resulted: Gil-, bert 17, Hawker 12, Thompson 18, Morrison 14. Bullot 20, Morris 15, Coad 22, Brokerishire 15, Coleman 18, Cannock 5, ■ Gardiner 8. The first nine were declared duly elected. Messrs. Mclsaac j . and Garner acted as scrutineers. At a subsequent meeting of the committee, j Messrs. H. J. Gilbert and W. Bennett were re-elected chairman and secretary ' respectively. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr. J. B. Roy for acting as chairman. Mr. Gilbert thanked the committee for re-electing him as chairman and said he would continue to do his best for the committee and the advancement of the 1 school. The third Thursday in each month, commencing at 7.30 p.m., was fixed for the committee meetings. Messrs. Morris and Hawker were appointed a visiting committee for the month of May. FITZROY. The attendance at iFitzrov was a good one, and included a few ladies. Mr. V. 1 Arden was in the chair. | The balance-sheet showed a creditbalance of £2 18s fld. The secretary submitted a verbal re--1 port, in which he urged the holding of a bazaar or some similar function for the purpose of raising funds for the re-] erection oE the shelter shed. A big item, to be considered by the incoming committee was the matter of drainage at 1 th'e school. Credit was due to the head- ; master for the way in which he had per- , formed his duties. The headmaster was i often blamed when he should not be. It i was the duty of the committee to help 3 him in all matters. The headmaster (Mr. 0. Johnston), on being asked to report to the meeting, 1 referred to the increasing number of pu--2 pils at the school. The roll was now i three times as large as when he first - took charge. The number of cadets was 3 also increasing, and it would soon be a full sized company. He paid a tribute to his two sergeants, who had assisted him materially by taking charge of the corps when he had other duties to attend to. The Scripture lessons had not been so well attended as he might have wished. He submitted a proposal to circularise parents re the attendance of children at the Scripture lessons. He 0 emphasised the secretary's remarks in 1 connection with the drainage at the e school. From estimates he had seen, it 1 would cost from £-250 to £3OO to raise the grounds level with the road. He suggested that the Education Board be approached re purchasing an adjacent property and selling the present property, which would probably more than compensate for the outlay. He considered the day would come when an epidemic would break out. After a shower ; of rain, water oame up to the back door £ of the school and became the nucleus of a quagmire. He suggested that the » Borough Council should be approached g re the installation of a septic tank in „ Fitzroy. The shelter shed was a miser- . able structure, and an unhealthy one e Another matter which he wished dis- _ cussed was the desirability of commenct rag school at nine o'clock, and takin« . an hour and a half at. mid-day, an ar°r rangement which he considered "might be a of benefit to the little ones. i 1 The method of Scripture instruction came in for criticism, but it was ex- . plained that it was necessary to divide 1 the scholars into classes for efficient inf struefcion I 3 A vote of thanks was passed to Miss! f.ord, late assistant at the school, for f the services she had rendered the children. - The frequent changes in teachers was discussed, but the master explained that J although the system was most inconvenis ent to him, yet it was unavoidable under tiie present system of transfer. » The election of the committee for the S ensuing year resulted in the following ' being elected: Messrs. A. Cathro, J. Hai" I " very C. H. Lawn, W. G. Reid, G. White ' thorne ßlCe E<!V ' J ' A " Kemp " 1 At a subsequent meeting Mr, J. H. Rice was elected chairman. The customary votes of thanks to the, retiring chairman and secretary were passed.
