THE FLORA. ! 1 The (Flora is expected to leave Welling- ' ton this afternoon for New Plymouth,! and is due here to-morrow. | ■ SUNK IN HARBOR. In last week's cable news there appear- ■, ed an interesting item relating to the > Norwegian iron ship Songvaar, 2128 tons, : | which, after having completed the load- / ing of 30,700 bags of wheat at Port Victoria, sank at her anchorage. It is supposed, stated the cable, that she struck . an unknown obstacle which pierced her > bottom. This is not an altogether un- ' usual happening, and a number of cases ) could be quoted in which the sinking of vessels at their moorings has afterl j wards been found to be directly attribut- ', able to their striking on their i and foundering. The-case of the Cromp-! ton, a barque which sailed from. Australia' for Quecnstown, is a somewhat similar one. This vessel in May, 1907, sank on her anchor and lay with her dacks awash. , Then there was the Shaw-Savill ship Lyttelton, which left Timaru in June, 1880, and whilst being towed out touched on her anchor -and sank. This vessel be- - came a total loss. Another interesting I case was that of the ship Opawa, which * met with similar misfortune at Oamaru. The steamship Jessie Darling, when in Australian waters, also sank under similar circumstances, and when afterwards [ raised and docked it was found that her > anchor was embedded in her hull. \ OVERSEA VESSELS. j _____ ] STEAMERS TO ARRIVE AT WEL--1 LINGTON.
