A CITY'S LUNGS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Timaru, Last Night, i About 2000 people were present at the 1 ceremony of opening the new road to Greenstone Island, at the mouth of the Opilii, which is expected to become a popular picnic resort, five miles from Temuka There would have been more people, but not enough vehicles were available. The road will also be of use to Maori fishermen and anglers. Hitherto the way to the island lay partly through private property, but with the aid of a Government subsidy a road line was bought through this and the road formed. AN EXPENSIVE VOTE. Timaru, Last Night. The Geraldine County clerk reported to the council to-day that the recent licensing election cost £97 Ids 9d, or, 3a 2%d per vote, and there was only' one hotel in the district. ' • TIMARU'S TRAMS. Timaru, Last Night, Mr. F. Black, M.1.C.E., in a report to the Borough Council on the electric tramway proposal, speaks favorably of the prospects of an installation within the borough of two lines, one north to south and one east to west in a horseshoe, a total of six and three-quarter miles The estimate of capita] cost is £67 069 revenue £11,812, expenditure £10.417.' Unless hydro-electricity can be had at £5 10» per unit, it would be cheaper to use a Diesel oil engine power station.
