J k Received 18, 9.20 p.m. Sydney, April 16. I^^^^^HRjtai^kjwuLcMartian (S^BMBIMBP '• The Wellington Racing Cluib's autumj. meeting opens at Trentham to-day, and 'i will be concluded on Saturday. Acceptances for the first day's races are rather '■• disappointing, (but the principal handicaps have filled well, and the racing '• should be first-class. Seventeen horses have paid up for me • Thompson Handicap, run over one mile, '• and the winner appears to be well concealed. The top-weights, Los Angelos t and Boanerges, are sure to have a big following, but on recent form Sea Queen, t Mira and Khamsin strike one as horses likely to set a warm pace for a mile. Should the going be at all heavy, KhamJ sin's prospects would be much enhanced. .' Mira won a double in great style at Ric- >• and the grey horse was never 3 better. Sea Queen has raced consistently through four or five meetings, and I am • told her connections expect her to run a sterling race. 1 Great interest is attached to the Rail--3 way Handicap (six furlongs), and the presence of Equitas, Gipsy Belle, Culprit 3 and Bandeira (of the top-weights) is in itself a sure guarantee of a keen con- ',] test. Bandeira, who was unlucky when • beaten by Autumnus on the second day at Canterbury, is quoted favorite, and ' must run well. Culprit is galloping well, but little is known of the condition of' I Equitas. Some people profess to like I Inuera. If the latter leaves the mark smartly that might be the end of it, I ■ but there are too many "ifs" and' ■ "mights" about that argument. Bootle ■ is going well, and on W T anganui and Ellerslio form must run well forward. The issue looks very open. Zante has been paid up for in the Hack Steeplechase, but will have to show improved form to have a chance with several of the opposition. Beeline, who ran well in the Autumn Steeplechase at Ellerslie until he ran off, is likely to start favorite. If Mira is reserved for the big handicap a poor crowd will line up for the : Waiwetu Handicap. Rill did not show '> any form at iFeilding, and Blakeney, who ran well at Riccarton, will have many ' backers. Con the Shaughraun is gallop- ' ing in good style, but a sharpening-up gallop might improve him greatly. Should Ladrone sport silk in the Sil- >, verstream Handicap he will find a host ! of ibackers. Moutoa Girl and To Waha- I roa are decidedly smart, and should run;: well, and the same applies to Grandee. ■'. _ The Plunket Xursery Handicap looks 1 like a battle between the Porirua and i Karamu staibles. The former claims : throe representatives—Jan, Styx and 1 Stepney—and Haskayne and Eocene will carry the cerise jacket. Styx and Haskayne are reported to be most spoken , of for the event. ' y The Tinakori Handicap looks more ] open. Dirge, Semaphore, Distinction and <
there have been winning lately, and hey may carry most of the investments. The New Zealand St. Leger. Stakes oo'ks, on form, a gift to Clifford's stering fillv Counterfeit. The absence of Bronze takes all interest out o! the race. I
