A BIG COLONIAL FIRM.

JAS. NIVEN AXD CO. The Campbell and Ehrenfried Co., Ltd., have just placed an order with Messrs Jas. J. Xiven and Co., Ltd., for a refrigerating and power plant to be installed in tli'ir brewery at Auckland. The installation will consist of a "Linde" refrigerating plant capable of making 18 tons of ice per 21 hours, driven by an 80-b.h.p. enclosed ventilated type electric motor. The ammonia condenser will be of the "atmospheric" type, containing over 5000 feet of special ammonia tubing. It will be manufactured in Xiven and Co.'s Xapior works, wliere an extensive plant is installed for this class of work. Mr. P. J. Barry also recently ordered from Messrs Xivai and Co. an 18-ton "Linde" refrigerating plant for the Cisbo.rne brewery. It will be driven by a 70b.h.p. "National" gas engine. In addition to the foregoing, Messrs Xiven and Co. have, at the present time, | the following contracts in hand: — A complete two-cell "Sterling" refuse destructor plant for the Napier Borough Council. A 50-ib.h.p. '"'National" suction gas engine for Messrs Go: ..'jllow, Limited, \ Hamilton. ■A complete electric, lighting and power plant for the Hawke's Bay Hospital and Charitable Aid Boan-d. A rock-drilling and power ilant for Mr. A. P. Crey, Puncdin. A 55-b.h.p.- "National" suction gas engine and producer plant, also a steel gas holder and tank for the Acetone Illuj ininating and Welding Co., Ltd., Napier. I A complete electric lighting and power plant for the Wairoa Borough Council. This installation comprises two 28-kilo-watt electric generators, with suitable switchboard and mains, etc., street reticulation, house connections and a fire alarm system. A 26-b.h.p. "'"'National" gas engine and producer plant for Messrs C. L. Lines and Co., of Hamilton. Two GOin Broadbent's electrically-driv-en hydro extractors and a "Pctrie" wowl \ dryer, capable of dealing with oOOlbs of wool per hour, for the South Otago Freezing Co., Ltd., Balclutha. A horizontal multitubular marine type boiler, Oft diamoter by 7ft Bin long, for the s.s. Wairoa, Pieton. J A 70-b.h.p. "Xational" suction gas en- ) gine for Messrs Montgomery and Co., j Christc'hureh. | A pumping and power plant for the ) Pukekohe Town Board, comprising a , three-throw horizontal ram type pump, I capable of delivering 9000 gallons of J water per hour against a head of 5000 ft, driven by a 58-ib.h.p. "Xational" auction gas engine. The complete equipment of the freoz- . ing works now in course of erection at Whangarfi. The main features of this installation are an 18-ton "Linde" refri- . gerating plant, driven by a 55-b.h.p. "Xational" suction gas engine, a 30-kilowatt . electric dynamo, driven by a 48-b.h.p. , "National" gas engine, a fellmongery and , boiling-down plant, comprising a Niven's ' patent rotary manure dryer, capable of [' handling the' offal of 700 "sheep per day, ! two tallow digesters, two refiners, a com- , bination grinding, elevating, screening . and bagging plant, also a complete. electric lighting plant, etc. A 17-n.h.p. H. Crease and Son. Ltd., jam and pickle , manufacturers; a 36-b.li.p. for Mr. E. , Colley, furniture manufacturer; and a 62-b.h.p. for the Wellington Cordage Co., Ltd. Electric lighting plants were also installed in Messrs Crease's and Colley's establishments, and at the present time an extensive plant is being installed at the Wellington Gaa Company's works at Miramar. It consists of two 36 and one (52-b.li.]). "National" gas engines, a compound wound electric generator (153 amperes at 230 revolutions per minute) and two generators of the same type but of 71) amperes, at 250 revolutions per minute; also a Gwyime "Invincible" type all-brass pressure pump, capable of 'delivering 10.000 gallons of water per hour against a head of 130 ft... driven by a 13b.h.p. electric motor. ( It is apparent that Messrs Nivcn and Co. play a very important part in the engineering industry of the Pominion, and with such a substantial list of contracts in hand they are making an excellent start for the financial year just commencing.
