TARATA DOG TRIALS.

Tarata is a pretty little township, which is reached after a drive of about twelve miles from Inglcwood, along the Junction road. It is a very picturesque and pleasant drive, the scenery along the zig-zag being well worth seeing. Next Thursday and (Friday there should be ,quite. an .influx into the township, for on those days the Tarata .Sheep Dog Trial Club is holding its fifth annual meeting. These meetings have become popular witli competitors and spectators alike, for the former realise that the club is a progressive one, and leaves no stone unturned to cater well for them. This can readily be seen by a glance at the prize list, as in the four matches—head, bring 'back and hold in ring, driving and yarding trial, huntaway, and local event—'over £3O in prize money is awarded, in addition to the president's cup, gold medals and numerous special prizes. As a result, large entries have been received, and a successful gathering is assured. Spectators appreciate the acumen of the committee, because they realise that they will have an opportunity of witnessing the best dogs in Taranaki handled by the best shepherds, working their sheep on the best .methods, and as Taranaki's hinterland has a big future before it as a sheep.carrying country this is a good and useI fill sport to encourage, combining, as it

does, amusement with utility. Elaborate arrangements have been made for the entertainment of visitors. Tarata has

a reputation to keep up, and visitors can be certain it will not be allowed to suffer. On Thursday a social will be held, and on Friday there is to be a smoke concert, for both of which every preparation has been made.
