ENTERTAINMENTS

PICTURE PANTOMIME AT THE EMPIRE. Something at once novel and entertaining was screened at the Empire Picture Theatre on Saturday night, in the shape of a Cine Roma pantomime, "Pinocchio." The piece, which is in a picturesque setting, includes many pretty and unusual scenes, and is responsible for some amazing samples of the "black art." The hero, or rather the mischievous young imp, "Pinocchio," is changed into a donkey, subsequently changed back to a wooden puppet, and later on to an ordinary human being. One scene affords a peep into an animal kingdom, where cats, dogs, bears, monkeys, and all manner of beasts hold sway and dispense justice and all other functions appertaining to civic life, in a fashion which tickled the audience immensely. "Fmocchio" is a pantomime right after the heart of every child, and should not b« missed by any of the small fry. At the same time it has certain features which endear it to the adults also, and, summed up, is both one of the daintiest and diverting samples of the kinematographer's art yet seen in New Plymouth. In contrast to "Pinocchio* the current programme includes several powerfully dra- | matic subjects, and a good sprinkling of bright and humorous comedies, including a decided hit—"Wage and the WageEarner."
