THE TRADES COUNCIL.

CRITICISING TAXATION. By Telegrapk—Press Association. Arlington, Saturday. The Trades Council Conference endorsed the principle of making rating on unimproved land values compulsory, and entered a protest against the proposed increase in the land tax exemption from £SOO to £IOOO. The conference decided that it is unable to accept the invitation from the Victorian Trades and Labor organisation to send delegates to a conference in Melbourne this month, to discuss the j question of disarmament, but gives unqualified approval to any proposal put forward that will tend to strengthen the agitation against the burdensome, unprofitable, and ridiculous competition in armaments going on at present, and which is undoubtedly detrimental to the best interests of the ptople. A resolution was adopted urging the Government to employ only members of unions when engaging casual labor.
