Captain Scott, in a letter to the Attorney-General, dated October 31, shows that he was hopeful of reaching the Pole. He says: "In the end we shall have a mass of material which will repay all the outlay on the expedition, judged by scientific standards, but we can scarcely be contented with that. We hope to have cause to rejoice a-t something which appears more largely a matter of sentiment with our race."
