Mr. T. B. Crump has decided to become a candidate for the mayoralty of EHham. Out of 28 applicants, Mr. J. B. Emmett was yesterday elected secretary of the Masterton A. and P. Association.

Mr. J. S. S. Medley has definitely decided to contest the New Plymouth mayoralty. Besides the sitting mayor (Mr. G. W. Browne) it is not thought that there will be any other candidates. Mr. Edgar R. Waite, P.L.S., curator of Canterbury Museum, has received a •able from Prof. David, F.R.S., of Sydney, offering him the position of biologist in charge on Dr. Mawson's ship, the Aurora, for a six weeks' cruise in the sub-Antarctic waters.

Miss Olive McLeod, who was engaged to Lieutenant Boyd Alexander, treacherously killed by natives while on an exploring mission in Central Africa, and who journeyed from England to Africa in May last year to place a headstone over her lover's tomb, is now betrothed to Mr. Charles L. Temple, C.M.G., Chief Secretary of Northern Nigeria, Mr. W. J. T. Wiggs, of the New Plymouth Public Works Office, who is under transfer to Nelson as chief clerk, Was on Saturday presented by Mr. G. T. Murray, engineer in charge, with a travailing bag, on behalf of the combined office and field staff of the Taranaki road district. Mr. Wiggs will be succeeded at New Plymouth by Mr. Grut.

Last week the residents of Rahotuand Siatrict entertained Mr. and Mrs. A. W. Hood and family, who are leaving for T&riki, Mr. Hood having been licensee of the Rahotu hotel for the last seven years. During that time he and Mrs. Hood have made a large circle of friends. JThe hall was crowded. Mr. S. J. Candish, on behalf of the residents, presented Mr. and Mrs. Hood with a solid silver afternoon tea service, and Miss Rita Hood with a lady's companion. Mr. W. R. Wright, one of the oldest residents in Rahotu, also made some complimentary remarks, to which Mr. Hood modestly replied, expressing regret at leaving the district where he had spent so many pleasant years. Mr. Hood will take over the Tariki Hotel this week.
