THE DEFENCE ACT.
MINISTERIAL SUPPORT. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Thursday. A deputation representing the Peace Society and several labor organisations waited on Mr. Myers, Minister for Defence, and protested against the compulsory sections of the Defence Act, and declared they would never rest until they were repealed. The Minister repeated his declaration of. yesterday, that he would be no party to the law being broken, and said that everybody would be treated alike. The reason the Act was compulsory was that they believed it was the duty of every individual to serve the State. A member of the deputation asked if the Minister would be prepared to amend the Act so as to prevent force being used in industrial disputes. The Minister said he would not be in favor 'of that, because law and order must be maintained. The statement was received with ironical laughter.
