empire picture palace. 1 "IT IS NEVER TOO LATE TO MEND." If it is an advertisement to turn people aawy from a picture theatre, the management at the Empire received a good advertisement last evening. Long before eight o'clock standing-room in ar,d P't was at a premium, and the stalls were soon in like condition, um ers being unable to gain admission, ifle great attraction was the picture of Ohas Reades popular story, "It is Never •+ni f e and the graphic recital by Alfred Boothman. The many picture patrons who were unable to gain admission last night will have the last opportunity of viewing this fine picture ..If evening, as the manager assures us this is the last time the picture will be shown m New Plymouth. At to-mor-row a matinee another great "star" attraction will be presented (by special arrangement with The Greater J D. Wiliiams Amusements, Ltd.), a wonderful uine Roma pantomime entitled "Pinocchio. Pinocchio is a puppet wrought j <^ reful hand of an old carpenter, and, as in the story of Pygmalion and tralatea, is finally endowed with life. Life to Pinocchio is a series of adventures and most marveillous mishaps. He is caught by robbers and hanged, but by the blue-haired fairy, who gnres him four gold coins for his father. Theee gold coins lead to still further misadventure, for the avaricious bat and fox beguile the simple automaton to the city of Clap-trap, where he is robbed, and, with Gilbertian justice, imprisoned to make up for it. From the prison he escapes to fall into the sea, and 6tartf» out on a 90 days' swim, which ends in his being swallowed by a whale. Tire whale is captured by Indians, who wish to make Pinocchio their chief, but the wooden boy declines the honor, and runs away till he reaches the cam<p of some Canadian Militia, who send him home by shooting him from the month of a cannon. Altogether Pinooehio's adventures furnish a most diverting pantomime story, bright, humorous and original.
