The Committee of Union and Progress had a sweeping victory at the election, the Opposition having practically disappeared. What are left are merely the irreconcilable sections. The union's success is due to the stubborn resistance of the troops in Tripoli, neutralising the earlier indignation against the committee, combined with carefully engineered reports of Turkish successes. A STEAMER FIRE. New York, April 9. The steamer Ontario, belonging to the Merchants' Transportation Company, is in flames off New York harbor. The passengers were rescued. The steamer's crew is lighting the flames, but with little success. The cargo of cotton has been jettisoned. The captain ran the Vessel ashore when the lire started. BRITISH TRADE. London, April 9. The imports for the month increased by £2,649,567, exports decreased by £149,941, and re-exports increased by £1,692,040.
