WAITARA NEWS.

(Prom Our Own Correspondent.) A meeting of those interested in getting their farm properties separated from the Waitara Borough was held in the Clifton Hall on Tuesday evening, 9th inst. There were about twenty present. Mr. W. Birdling presided. A plan was presented, showing the properties proposed to be cut off from the borough, and a petition signed by those present is to be forwarded to the Minister. The New Zealand Shipping Company's s.s. Banffshire arrived in the roadstead 011 Saturday morning last from Lyttelton. There is a large cargo to be shipped. There is a probability of two of three citizens being nominated for the mayoral seat. The sanitary condition of Waitara is not by any means a credit to the town. A case of diphtheria is now reported. The drainage system, which lias been talked about for the last eighteen months, seems as far off as ever. There are several alterations being made in local business premises which should add to the appearance of the town. The friends of Mr. W. T. Jennings propose 'to give him a complimentary social and make him a presentation on Thursday, the 18th inst. It is anticipated that the Hon. G. Laurenson will be present.
